Shuten (1165 - 1237)
The legendary king of the Ryukyu islands in the early thirteenth century. He was the lord of Urasoe until he defeated the usurper Riyu, who had overthrown the rightful king of the Tenson Dynasty. He therby united all of Ryukyu and began his own royal line. In Japan, legend says he was the son of Minamoto no Tametomo, who fled to the Ryukyu islands after the Hogen Rebellion. THat legend is the base for Takizawa Bakin's book, "Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon." In the Seventeenth century, when the Ryukyu islands were invaded by Satsuma forces, this was also used to support the claim that the Japanese and Ryukyuans shared a common ancestry.
