Description[]
1767 - 1825
A sumo wrestler of the mid-Edo period, he is known as the strongest wrestler in the history of sumo. Hailing from Shinano Province, he won 28 of the 36 sumo tournaments he entered. He suffered only 10 defeats in his entire career and holds the all-time highest winning percentage of 96.2 with a winning streak of 9 tournament championships in a row. He was so strong they had to limit the number of techniques he was allowed to use. For some unknown reason he was never able to reach the top sumo rank of Yokozuna. When his name was found carved on the bell of the newly restored Hōdoji Temple, the shogunate was furious and kicked him out of Edo.
