A poet of the Asuka period and daughter of Princess Kagami. Loved by Emperor Tenmu, she bore him a daughter, Princess Tōchi. She later became consort to Tenmu's older brother, Emperor Tenji. There is speculation that she was the cause of bad blood between the brothers that led to a succession dispute. Thirteen of her poems appear in the "Man'yōshū." In modern times, she has often been portrayed in novels and plays as a beauty adored by two imperial princes.
